Summer Reading Tips for Teens

Check out books that won the Newbery Medal or Newbery Honor. There are so many excellent stories that were published 20, 30 and 40 years ago that area great summer reads. "The Phantom Tollbooth" and "A Wrinkle in Time" are two favorites.

Or look at titles that have been given the Alex Award (given to adult books that are also great reads for teens).

This is going to sound like a crazy suggestion because summer is for light reading, right? Right! If you are a teen going into college in the fall, try to read one book on anything related to communication... relationships, language, public speaking, how you "speak" with your body. Go to your favorite bookstore and ask for a recommendation. This will help you so much as you prepare for face-to-face interactions in college, both with new/existing friends and with your profs. It will also give you a leg up on learning skills to help you in class and with group/paired/individual assignments. Happy summer! Ellen Bremen, M.A. @chattyprof http://chattyprof.blogspot.com
