Presidential Scholars Announced
Tweet Share on Facebook May 3, 2011 Comment (1)Secretary of Education Arne Duncan announced the 141 U.S. Presidential Scholars Monday. The award goes to high school seniors who demonstrate "outstanding academic achievement, artistic excellence, leadership, citizenship, service, and contribution to school and community."
The students will be honored in Washington, D.C. from June 18-21. Each student will bring one teacher that inspired or challenged him or her.

White House Calls for Improved Hispanic Education
Tweet Share on Facebook May 2, 2011 Comment (1)The White House outlined a series of steps Friday to improve educational achievement among Hispanics, while detailing initiatives the Obama administration has taken to achieve that goal.
With more than 50 million Hispanics in the United States, they are the fastest-growing demographic, but have some of the lowest educational attainment levels. Latinos are also one of the youngest demographics in America, with 12.4 million enrolled in K-12 schools. One in five of America's students are Hispanic. Almost half of all Latino students never graduate from high school. Ten percent of all students are English-language learners.

Maryland Chemistry Teacher Named Best in Nation

Michelle Shearer, who has been teaching at Urbana High School in Frederick, Md. for 10 years, will be honored by President Obama on Tuesday.
