The United States Government does not want it's citizens to be smart or well educated because The Government doesn't want us asking too many questions. Our Government is the most manipulative and dangerous Government probably ever to be in existance. The United States wouldn't be able to control us and influence our decisions as strongly if we were better educated. Our US Government will never implement better education because all our money goes to paying off the Federal Reserve Bank (our tax dollars only really pays off our governments debt) or bigger weapons for our military so we can destroy other countries based on lies. We do need a better education system here in America, but I seriously doubt that will ever happen.

For the last 6 weeks I have been participating in an online course to develop an online collaborative forum (Blog) for elementary students. It is known by all educators the importance of increasing student technology skills, as noted in the Partnership for21st Century Skills and the ISTE NETS for students. After spending the last 6 weeks reading material, interacting online with other participants, and watching videos that promote this thinking, it was mind altering to watch this video from MSNBC on the Waldorf School, which provides the exact opposite of what we as educators are currently doing in our classrooms as directed by our administration, state and national education reform. If executives of Google and other Silicon Valley technology leaders are sending their children to this school, it makes me wonder if we may be pushing too much technology into our elementary schools for the wrong reasons. These thoughts, coupled with the many news reports and blogs noting nations surpassing the US in education don’t seem to mention technology as being a reason for success or failure. Although in my opinion the technology piece is important, but at what grade level? I think there has to continue to be the focus on curriculum, while pursuing why other countries are having success.

I think we need to be careful about modeling our education system after other countries. Not all countries provide public education through high school. In China, for example, according to the Chinese Education and Research Network, basic education begins in preschool (which can last up to 3 years from age 3 - 6), and children get 9 years of formal education. This means that when they are ready for middle school, they must take an entrance exam to determine whether they can continue an academic education, or if they need a vocational education in which they can learn a job trade. In the United States we educate and test all students including students with severe special needs, learning disabilities, and second language learners from kindergarten - 12th grade. When we compare our 15 year old students to 15 year old students in other countries, we need to be aware if it is a true comparison. Before we jump to the conclusion that we should follow the lead of other countries in education, let's be sure that we are not measuring success by comparing the top 20% of 15 year old students in a country like China to an average of our entire population of diverse learners.
I would not want to change the fact that we educate all students in the United States through 12th grade because that is one of the things that makes America great. We give an education to everyone regardless of race, language, socioeconomic level, or disability. Those are the kind of freedoms that define America and set us apart from other countries. That does not mean that we should let students graduate that cannot read, write, etc., but everyone should have an equal opportunity to learn.
I don't know what the answer is to educational reform, or rather, there are too many answers right now. I have no doubt that other countries have some things in place that we could learn from, however, I do not want our education system to "weed out" students at an early age so that our test scores will look better compared to other countries. Maybe not every student that goes through the education system in the United States does well on standardized tests, but that is not how I personally measure the success of my life, do you? The quality of life for the average American citizen is something to be proud of all things considered. I would much rather live in a country that has an entire population of citizens with a basic education than live in a country where the top 20% excel, but the rest of the population has a 5th grade education.
Changes need to be made in education, I think we would all agree, but I do not think a system that denies education for all students is the right kind of change to make. If we are not careful about the educational reform choices that we make, that may be the kind of country we find ourselves living in.

America has been trying to reform its education in the last 40 years. Much of what this report is saying is very true. But, why is so little said about putting the responsibility on the parents and their students? True there are many unqualified teacher in our classrooms but the text books are there. I believe, if there is a will to learn there will be a way, found. Too many classrooms are taken over by "bullys against teachers and learning". We waste precious classroom time on this at the expence of those who want to learn. Then too, why are all the electronic gadgets allowed in the classrooms? Silicon Valley has contributed to the deterioration of our students' attention span, communication skills and ability to concentrate on a subject such as math and science--"too difficult and why should I strees out?"
Yes, America, unless you take these things more seriously, you may be lost, forever!
