U.S. News Seeks to Fill 3 Gaps in Online Education Data
Tweet Share on Facebook June 30, 2011 Comment (12)U.S.News & World Report will be collecting data for a revamped online education section of this website as early as mid-July. (My colleague Bob Morse recently posted the text of a letter from U.S. News Editor Brian Kelly to college presidents detailing our plans for online education rankings.) In doing so, it aspires to create a valuable resource for prospective online students by providing information that doesn't exist today. U.S. News will be addressing three major deficiencies in online education data:

U.S. News to Collect Online Education Data
Tweet Share on Facebook June 29, 2011 Comment (3)As early as mid-July, U.S.News & World Report will begin a first-ever effort to collect in depth data from all online bachelor's and five master's degree level education programs in the United States. To that end, U.S. News Editor Brian Kelly reached out to college presidents to inform them about the new and exciting online education project and to urge them to help facilitate a response from their campuses. Below is the full text of the letter:

Tweet Share on Facebook June 23, 2011 Comment (1)The National Council on Teacher Quality's National Review of Education Schools, which is being done in partnership with U.S. News, is well underway. The goal of the review is to rate more than 1,000 of the largest teacher preparation programs in the United States by awarding grades based on each program's performance in 17 different standards on key elements of the design of a teacher training program, including the selectivity of their admissions, how well schools prepare teachers to teach reading, and classroom management training. The current goal is to publish the results in fall 2012.

U.S. News May Change Its Law School Ranking Methodology
Tweet Share on Facebook June 16, 2011 Comment (6)There is a very strong likelihood that U.S. News will change the way it computes "at graduation" and "nine months after graduation" legal placement rates that will be used in the methodology for the upcoming 2013 edition of the Best Law Schools rankings, as a result of recent action taken by the American Bar Association.

U.S. News Again Urges ABA to Improve Jobs Data
Tweet Share on Facebook June 9, 2011 Comment (6)There have been many voices of late encouraging law schools to publish much more in-depth and accurate employment data as well as other consumer information on merit scholarships and details on salaries earned by each school's graduates. The American Bar Association's Section of Legal Education, which has oversight of law schools in this area, is meeting June 11 to discuss this issue and to look at recommended changes. This proposal contains many ideas that, if approved, would result in big improvements in the granularity of employment data available to the public and U.S. News, but it's unclear if it will take all the necessary steps to ensure data integrity.
Among those weighing in on this issue is Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.), who has written two letters to the ABA to insist that it take steps to improve the accuracy and transparency of the information that schools must provide to prospective students. She also urges the ABA to strengthen its oversight of admissions and post-graduation information reported by law schools and to improve access to information for law students across the country.

The final report is called A View of the U.S. News & World Report Rankings of Undergraduate Institutions from the College Admission Counseling Perspective. U.S. News staffers have met with NACAC's committee but did not play any role in developing the survey questions or writing the final report.
