High School Counselors Give Input on Best Colleges

I don't see much reason for high school counselors to rank colleges. Although most high school counselors could name some of the top schools, they are probably unable to rank colleges and universities outside of their region. In the Midwest, better qualified college applicants are often just told to look at Big Ten schools. And for students that aren't looking at these schools, they're mostly directed to state schools within the state. High school counselors are generally not going to be sending their students to out of state schools, simply because of tuition. And so, how can a high school counselor be as familiar with the top schools outside of their state as they are familiar with top schools inside their state? They can't.

Also, high school counselors almost never see the effect a particular school has had on a student. Their high school students rarely come back to say hi and tell them how much money they're making, how quickly they got a job, etc.

I think it is wise for U.S News to consult with high school counselors on colleges, but I also believe they should confer with private college counselors. Many high school counselors do not have the opportunity to visit a lot of schools during the year due to budget restrictions and other responsibilities. It is part of the responsibility of every private college counselor to visit a minimum number of colleges and universities each year. I think their feedback could be very beneficial toward more accurate college rankings.
