U.S. News Republishes 2011 Edition Engineering Specialty Rankings

Rankings in 11 of 12 engineering specialties now reflect the 2011 edition.

As a result of several database errors, we have taken down the most recent edition of some of the specialty rankings of engineering schools and reverted to our ranking of last year. While the changes are not significant, there are some discrepancies between the originally published data and the revised rankings currently at usnews.com. Those will now be the standard for this year. Unfortunately, we were unable to make changes in the printed version of Best Graduate Schools, which is now on newsstands.

Because year-to-year changes in these rankings are usually marginal, we don't feel that the outcome is substantial to our readers. However, we know that a one- or two-place change can be important to the institutions involved, and we apologize for any problems or confusion this has caused.

This has no effect on the overall ranking of Best Engineering Schools. In addition, we have rechecked all the data used in all other rankings and confirmed that this database problem was limited to 11 of the 12 engineering specialty rankings. Only the computer engineering rankings are new for the 2012 edition.

The following engineering specialty rankings have been carried over from those published in the 2011 edition of Best Graduate Schools, which were ranked in 2010: biological / agricultural, civil, industrial / manufacturing, and mechanical. These four specialty rankings have been on usnews.com since April 15, 2010.

The rankings of several schools in aerospace / aeronautical / astronautical, bioengineering / biomedical, chemical, electrical / electronic / communications, environmental / environmental health, materials, and nuclear engineering have changed since the March 15, 2011 release. As of March 18, 2011, these rankings have been carried over from those published in the 2011 edition, which were ranked in 2010. This is the corrected list. However, the discrepancies in the rankings themselves were not able to be corrected in the 2012 print edition of Best Graduate Schools.
