Grad School Ranking Surveys Are In the Mail
Tweet Share on Facebook October 21, 2010 Comment (4)We've just started the data collection for the upcoming 2012 edition of the Best Graduate Schools rankings, which will be published in early 2011. The statistical survey data collection for business, law, engineering, medicine, and education programs began October 19 on our password-secured website. The deadline to complete the statistical surveys is December 1.
In addition, the new grad school peer assessment reputation surveys are also being sent out. The peer surveys have roughly eight weeks in the field, with a second survey mailing going to those who don't respond the first time. U.S. News works with Synovate, a Chicago based market research firm, to administer the reputation survey mailings.

U.S. News Takes Part in Worldwide Talks on Rankings
Tweet Share on Facebook October 14, 2010 Comment (2)I just returned from the IREG-5 Conference: The Academic Rankings: From Popularity to Reliability and Relevance, held in Berlin, Germany, earlier this month. The conference was the fifth meeting of the world's leading experts on university rankings. IREG-5's stimulating program discussed various topics concerning national, regional, and global university rankings and their impact on the academic world, society, and policymakers. Also discussed, but not finalized, was the creation of a set of principals and standards called the IREG audit that will determine whether rankings are being done according to high standards. Attending the conference were 150 participants from about 50 countries.
Following the IREG-5 conference, I attended the Maribor Academicus Event: Mapping of Academic Excellence in the Context of Quality Assurance in Maribor, Slovenia. These global meetings are an opportunity to exchange ideas and experiences with those who publish and study rankings around the world.

Looking at the New Rankings of Best Public Colleges
Tweet Share on Facebook October 7, 2010 Comment (1)Many public colleges have seen big increases in the number of applications as students and their parents are becoming more attracted to the lower sticker prices they find at the publics in their own states.
For many students, public colleges can be a far more affordable choice than a private college, with in-state tuition being the best bargain. Public colleges also can be the low-cost pick for many out-of-state students, because even out-of-state tuitions typically don't approach the prices at private colleges. However, some publics have been heavily impacted by budget cuts and have had to sharply raise tuitions or make other program cuts that may impact the ability to graduate in four years, which will affect the cost comparison between publics and privates.
