Diversity environmetn is definitely important. If you see the top 20 colleges, they have a very good diversity from age, religious beliefs, race etc. Networking is also possible which is very beneficial in the future remembering US is not the only developed country now!! Competitions in diversity environments are also usually tough which might also boost up the competitive skills of each and every students.

Number one, not everything you learn is directly related to the academics. Number 2, my degree is in history. In my history classes, particularly those relating to Asia, Latin America, Africa, etc, student from countries in those parts of the world often knew as much as the professor did, or more. So by taking a class students who's knowledge of a culture rivals the professor teaching it, its a great learning experience. Also, for those of us who studied foreign languages, being in a diverse area is important because we need to interact with native speakers of those languages.

a diversity of thought and opinion is important.

we livew in a society where not everyone is a white anglo saxon protestant landowning male, and children, kids, teenagers and young adults should be exposed to a diversity of thought, opininon and background to be well-rounded and thoughtful adults.

Diversity does not change the mathematical fact of integrals. But college has a lot to do with socializing, study groups, friends and social comfort levels. Learning to work in groups, teams and respecting other people are just as important lessons as any mathematical formulae.

I do get that it is important to understand other cultures. It helps us understand our place in the world. But in a lifetime of experiences, the four years spent in college or university is best focused on deriving the most out of the Education investment.

It is the wildest kind of stretch to even suggest that a diverse student body is going to be a benefit in the education process. It is going to change the laws of Physics, or the exactness of Math, or change the operation of Genetics, or change the GAAP of Intermediate accounting, or the performance of a orchestral piece, or the interpretation of a work of art? I do not get it!

I would presume that parents would want their child to attend a college known for its academics rather than having a "diverse" college. Why is diversity so important to the writer? Granted many great colleges offer a diverse student body, but does diversity for diversity's sake make for a better college?
