College League Tables can sometimes create irrational needs to be with the "In crowd". They do sell magazines and often serve to fill the pockets and rosters of the "Top Ten" but how do they change the college admissions market for the better.

We here at Kaarme had 15 years experience at Reuters developing league tables (LT's) and financial models for the financial industry and saw in 2002 that LT's are often good for leading the lambs to the slaughter. Look where banking is now. Financial firms (sheep) want to go with the largest volume name rather than the most competent or the best match through careful research. In the end, we wound up with a top heavy, unstable, undiversified financial system.

Same is true of colleges and universities. Out of 4000 US colleges, a disproportionate number of students follow the LT's to those top ranked schools, often ignoring common sense and thoughtful analysis such as Colleges That Change Lives or The Education Conservancy. When this college LT focus finally abates, many students and parents out of financial necessity will look for the RIGHT college matches among “second tier” schools using efficient market techniques set forth in this paper - http://Kaarme.com/future

Top brand names will always be top brand names. Second tier brand names may not be as good as the top brand names but they aren't far off either. Same goes for students. High quality 70th-90th percentile students should be looking for high quality 70th-90th percentile college matches which number over 100.

Families can now use the right free internet tools for making themselves more attractive to many colleges outside of the top 30 looking for their diverse attributes and willing to offer incentives. Students will no longer be price takers. They will have financial choices and will ultimately diversify the educated masses a little better.
