I not only attend Capella in a Masters program, I also work at another online college. There are very few independent organizations that help hold online schools accountable. More importantly, it is difficult for perspective students to make educated decisions about online schools. I took the risk of attending Capella knowing that there was a lot of negative feedback out there. The fact that US News is talking about this “transparency by design” is very important in my opinion. Another good resource is www.oedb.org , and keep in mind, they have become regionally accredited, and this is not an easy process.
I must say that besides needing more individualized attention from the college (such as providing us with professor’s office hours and phone numbers); I have been at times overloaded with knowledge. Those who dig deep in to the curriculum will be prepared for real world experience. Online college requires students to have intrinsic motivation. If you attend an online school, you can make up for the perceived lack of socialization and networking by getting involved in think groups through the school. Although online education is not perfect yet, transparency by design is another way that Capella is showing that they care.

they have an absurdly low graduation rate. this is the LAST thing they'd ever do; something that deals with accountability.
