Like it or not social media is a cornerstone of the marketing world and should absolutely be incorporated into MBA programs, outreach, and more. The two way interaction that social media allows for a company, a school, and individuals is far more valuable that the "shotgun communication approach" from days of old. Might as well embrace it.

Good and timely article. We not only infuse an understanding of social networking into several of our courses at Carnegie Mellon, we also teach a class specific to measuring the social space http://bit.ly/beaDwa. It's a graduate level experiential class where groups of students (MBA, Public Policy and Information Systems) work as a team of consultants to companies looking to get greater clarity in how social campaigns directly affect business objectives. We have worked with Thomson Reuters, eBay, Adidas, SAP, Comcast and the current lineup includes Pepsi, Starwood, Microsoft and others. There is a nice symmetry in value. Students get hands on experience, companies get to work with emerging thought leaders. We also model the class as a community so that all sponsors share best practices, issues, recommendations and tactics with each other. In addition, we commonly use social channels (twitter #cmusmc) as a communication tool inside and outside of the class setting. If you are interested in learning more, drop me a line

"For current students or graduates, 55 percent felt the social media options and subsequent classes were either "not up to par with the growing industry" (17.7 percent) or simply weren't provided (37.7 percent)."

Social Media in 7 Minutes is an online video training series that combines both up to date, step by step 'how to' social media training along with an all-in-one social media dashboard that will allow small business owners the ability to manage all of their social networking sites from one location in under 7 minutes a day. Check out this revolutionary new product at http://socialmediain7minutes.com

Sadly, social media impact on business is yet another area where b-schools react to the real world. By the time b-schools are "up to speed" on social media, they'll be long behind the next wave. Would that b-schools could lead change instead of following it.

We've seen this evolution at Thunderbird as well. We do have a digital marketing course that teaches social media management and branding, but more importantly we've launched seminars and workshops for students to use social media to aid in the job search. We have a few success stories to report as well from these efforts and that has been a huge boost.

For our upcoming professional development week, one of the top sessions is a course on Personal Branding in Social Media. Also, a 2-day session for using social media in the job search is required as part of our career management training.

I'm a marketing professor at Howard University and find administrators reluctant to incorporate social media into their marketing efforts. I just sent them the link to this article. Social media also has other uses in educational settings, as you can see in this article: http://hausmanmarketresearch.org/how-to-use-social-media-as-an-educational-tool
