Re: "Previous research shows that women can be penalized for exhibiting self-promoting behavior considered acceptable in men but unappealing in women."

Has anyone conducted a study to try and determine why women who swing from stripper poles get money thrown at them by complete strangers, but corporate boards can't seem to find enough qualified women who want to fill top positions?

If an international corporation needed to find an attractive trade-show model to simply hand out brochures in a convention center booth, it'd find them in less than a day and have them booked to work quickly, even though model-attractive looks are scarce in relation to the general population (not everyone is born highly attractive). In contrast, there are many many educationally well-credentialed women seeking promotions to upper executive management suites, and so many companies simply cannot seem to find them.

Funny how that works, no?

Fantastic article! We're trying to incentivize companies to care about women in top leadership by getting consumers to care about it. Would love your thoughts on The "No Glass Ceiling" Brand (c)- www.FemaleEqualityMatters.com ~Vote with your $ for organizations that have proven they value women as top talent!

I am almost 60, and things have improved. But still much is not equal - maybe it never will be.

I just tell younger women they need to be overqualified, and even then they need to help their supervisor understand how they add value and deserve pay on a par with their peers. Nothing more, nothing less. It works - especially as you get more experienced.

Women also need many professional credentials....I am a CPA and Certified Auditor, both being useful. In many fields like finance, banking, IT etc, these certifications help strengthen your perceived value.

Young women now have it a lot easier regarding equal pay than we did. The challenge now is the employment market. These credentials also help. Even in these bad times, I was promoted and earn well. One caution - I also have an MBA, but found it did not transate as easily to higher pay as did my CPA credential. .... Research this before investing in extensive and expensive upper level college courses. I am totally glad I did the MBA. But unless you live near a major urban area, it probably does not bring the salary you expect.
