High school students in West Virginia are assessed through state tests in math, science, social studies and reading and language arts. The West Virginia Department of Education has developed a plan to teach students "21st Century Learning Skills" related to information and communication; thinking and problem solving; and personal and workplace productivity.
In the U.S. News Best High Schools 2013 rankings, seven West Virginia schools earned silver medals and 20 received bronze medals. One silver medal goes to Morgantown High School in Monongalia County Schools, which is about 150 miles from the state capital of Charleston.
