High school students in New York take the Regents Exams, and if they live in poverty, may receive grants to attend college through the Higher Education Opportunity Program. According to the New York State Education Department, the grants are for attendance at independent New York colleges, such as Syracuse University.
New York has hundreds of schools in the U.S. News Best High Schools 2012 rankings, including 68 with gold medals, 174 with silver medals, and 128 with bronze medals. The highly ranked Baccalaureate School for Global Education, in the New York City Public Schools, is about 150 miles south of the state capital of Albany.
