High school students in New York take the Regents Exams, and if they live in poverty, may receive grants to attend college through the Higher Education Opportunity Program. According to the New York State Education Department, the grants are for attendance at independent New York colleges, such as Syracuse University.
New York has hundreds of schools in the U.S. News Best High Schools 2013 rankings, including 65 gold medal schools. The Brooklyn Latin School, in the New York City Public Schools, ranks among the top 25 high schools nationally. The school is located about 150 miles south of the state capital of Albany.
