Michigan high school students must earn between 16 and 18 credits in various subjects and take an online course before graduating. The state challenges schools to report early warning signs of future high school dropouts, and hosts a competitive grant opportunity for high-poverty schools, according to the Michigan Department of Education.

In the 2014 U.S. News Best High Schools rankings, Michigan has 10 schools with gold medals, 50 with silver medals and 131 with bronze medals. Michigan's highly ranked International Academy is about 80 miles from the state capital of Lansing, in the Bloomfield Hills School District.
