Massachusetts recommends that high school students follow the "MassCore" program of studies, which is a minimum of 22 units, including two units of a foreign language. The state, which has been granted flexibility from No Child Left Behind, tests students via the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System, according to the Massachusetts Department of Elementary & Secondary Education.
Among the many Massachusetts schools in the 2013 rankings of U.S. News Best High Schools, 24 were awarded gold medals, 30 earned silver medals and 22 received bronze medals. Many of Massachusetts's Best High Schools are located in the Boston area, in the Boston Public Schools.
