Maine high schools must instruct students in eight subject areas, including career and education development and world languages. Students take the Maine High School Assessment exams and may apply for the Regional Student Program Tuition Break at out-of-state colleges within New England, according to the Maine Department of Education.
Within the U.S. News Best High Schools 2013 rankings, there are three gold medal Maine schools, 12 silver medal schools and eight bronze medal schools. The highly ranked Maine School of Science and Mathematics is located within the Maine School of Science & Math School District, which is about 250 miles north of the state capital of Augusta.
