Idaho requires high school students to take three years of math courses and three years of science courses; complete a senior project; and take the SAT, ACT or Compass exam by the end of their junior year. Students are assessed by the Idaho Standards Achievement Tests, according to the Idaho State Department of Education.

In the 2014 U.S. News Best High Schools rankings, 10 Idaho schools were awarded silver medals and 45 received bronze medals. Idaho's one gold medal school is Coeur D’Alene Charter Academy, located in Coeur D’Alene, about 400 miles from the state capital of Boise.
