More Grad School Free Money: Taxes

March 21, 2008 RSS Feed Print

Even if you don't get a scholarship or grant, you might still get at least a little free money from Uncle Sam. You might be able to get a bigger refund on your taxes by:

  1. Taking advantage of the Lifetime Learning Tax Credit.
  2. Deducting your tuition expenses from your taxes.
  3. Deducting the interest on your student loans from your taxes.

A good summary of educational tax benefits was published by the National Association of Financial Aid Administrators: Parent and Student Guide to Federal Tax Benefits for Tuition and Fees.
