Grad Students to Lose Federal Loan Subsidy

Isn't it time to start talking about the astronomically high interest rates being charged on all student loans, subsidized or unsubsidized. Where else can an investor get a guaranteed rate of return of 6.8% in today's market? And where is the downside risk in a loan that cannot be wiped out through bankruptcy proceedings?

Another result of the Tea Party in the House of Representatives. Education cuts to subsidize low taxes for the extremely wealthy.

Not only has tuition increased, but now loans are unsubsidized? Why should we have to pay for what is obviously a gross mismanagement of funds? Well, because students are one of the weakest groups in society. Young, unorganized, and just trying to survive, students are not likely to stand up for their rights; or so the government must think. Furthermore, our education system is not trying to create socially responsible, contributing, free thinking members of society (as is often the case with grad school) but rather people who do what they're told and rise no higher than what the government will allow. The question then becomes: will we allow it?

I encourage anyone having read this article to check out www.rebuildthedream.com specifically the blog entitled "Really Congress? Really?" which talks about loan interest rates doubling in July as well. Then let your local congress person (in California it's Boxer and Feinstein) know that you are opposed to the continued mismanagement of education. Please encourage everyone else you know (via social media such as Face Book if possible) to do the same.

How about adequately funding our higher education so that tuition wouldn't have to increase 8% per year.

How about making everyone pay back something? Why should some get to school scott free, just because they had a baby, or their parents are disadvantaged. If everyone had to pay back something..the costs could go down for everyone, including taxpayers.
