This is good and all but some tasks are easier said than done. I file for FAFSA at the very beginning of the year. I apply for as many scholarships as I can but have yet to win any. As a result I have had to take out loans but even the loans and Pell combined don't even cover the costs.

I am sick that the tuition has increased so tremendously. My son attended Baylor and graduated from Baylor Law School. Now my grandson wants to attend Baylor but his parents cannot afford it, nor can we give the kind of help needed with such extremely high tuition.

Our grandson graduated in the top five percent of his class and made 28 on the ACT. Yes, he did receive a small academic scholarship but when thinking about $80,000 for a year, that is above what a family can afford, even when making more than the average family.

While I would agree that filing the FAFSA in February in the past would not have been too late for financial aid, most of the Oregon Opportunity Grant deadlines for the 2010-11 school year were for FAFSAs first filed before the end of January. Given the continued economic challenges in many states like Oregon, deadlines will likely be early again. Students should file the FAFSA as soon after January 1 annually using estimated financial information and corect their FAFSA after the FAFSA is filed.
