It seems a shame that the emphasis is only on the increased

cost of college tuition and fees rather than the outrageous expeses by the Universities for tenured professors, new state of the art buildings and huge pensions promissed to the professors. The professors who teach socialism and communism to the tabla rasa minds of our young people and only encourage them to bite the hand of those who nurtured them. Whats wrong with this picture?

Please don't waste your children's time letting them lean any kind of software development or any discipline that is related to the software development life cycle. It is all being outsourced as fast as possible by all lines of business in every American company you can name. This is the first generation of American graduates that must expect a lower standard of living and making do with less because of the actions of American corporations. Is anyone angry yet?

America has the only government in the world which is stupid enough to throw away the futures of its own precious children. The unbelievably "FUBAR" politicians in Washington NEVER represent the wishes of "We the People", plus they have helped the corrupt bankers rob us. We must fight back by any means necessary!!! We NEED another "1776" right away!

We didn't qualify for any FAFSA aid,so have paid over $250,000 in cash to educate our children who are 2008,2010 grads from two of America's Top Ranked private universities. And we still owe another $80,000 in Plus and Stafford Loans. To avoid paying a high amount of interest, we borrowed money with the intention of paying it back after college,so our savings invested heavily in the stock market could grow. What a bad idea! Our savings tanked, and now the monthly payments to ACA and AES loan services top 700.00/month. Amazingly, one of the loans is at 9.5% compounded interest. We'll be lucky to have them paid off before we die! I was glad to read that the Feds will set limit on future Plus Loan interest rates. Both grads are unemployed and moving back home, starting Graduate School in the fall - but we are asking them to pay!

Yes, a lot of people underestimate the value of community colleges. I know a lot of high school seniors who go straight to 4-year universities and drop out only a year after or end up changing their majors several times (thus, accumulating thousands of dollars in student loans/ debt). Going to community colleges allow the students to mature so that they would be more focused and prepared upon entering universities.

General Ed courses are essential for a more well-rounded education. I strongly disagree on you with you saying that taking those classes is a waste of time. It has been there for years long before the decline of job supply. If you're talking about specialty, that's what vocational and tech schools are for. Although, good point on the subject of our jobs being brought overseas. We need to put Americans first, and put an end to outsourcing in developing countries. Those greedy corporations are hurting the US job market.

Another is I've noticed a lot of foreign-grads who now work in the US with H-1 B visas (even college grads from 3rd world countries). This is ridiculous. Common now.. America should stop shooting ourselves in the foot

I have tried for the last two years to deduct college tuition or college loans or get this wonderful tax credit. Unfortunately, there are income limits that are rarely mentioned. There are no tax breaks for two parents working as teachers for 30 years.

When I first thought of College, it was an understanding that to go to College isn't so much to learn what you want to do, but really its become more of the typical norm for a person who graduates from High School. College is more of a place to find who we're supposed to be, and what we want to do with our life, yet, it's fact that in a person's lifetime they will switch their careers no less than five times. That doesn't seem bad, a lifetime - five careers - but, how is that possible anymore when Colleges have put the cost of education into an elitest catergory. What we need to do is model the countries that have education available to their people for low costs, or free for that matter. The idea of tax breaks is fine, trying to help the middle class people out, but the reality that we are all faced with is that there is a growing class of people that aren't considered - the 'working poor'

Working to get the next pay check, and living pay check to pay check. If we don't make education affordible, and accessible to the all economic class of people - then the next bail out isn't going to matter, the next stimulus package will make no difference because we will have an over populated working class of people that will not be able to pay bills, won't be able to pay for supposed affordible health care plans, simply because they don't have the education to make themselves attractive to potential employers since they will be able to get the well educated people who were able to afford education.

Its sad, that we are trying to save the jobs of people who are already in the working sector - what about the people who are on unemployment the retraining options for them is laughable at best, if a person is on unemployment then they should simply have access to educate themselves in a field of their choice since we all know that when push comes to shove - the government is going to get their money back eventually since with a better educated, and trained person comes better wages, which the government in turn taxes since they elevate their financial status. Its time to think outside the box, and sadly, without an education - it seems that we are not going to get the change that we all so desperately need to make a difference for not just ourselves, but for our children, and theirs.

I have a Masters in Architecture degree. But I have unemployed since April of 2009. I'm going back to schoo in structual engineering. I'm havng a hard time getting grants, etc because of my architecture degree. Structual engineering would be an added value for future "green" jobs. Any suggestions on what grants or scholarships I can apply for? I am a 32 yeaer old female, single.

Part of the problem with college costs is simply that we keep creating more financial aid. More money becomes available to the education industry, so prices go up. Duh.

Add that to the massive debt that federal and state governments have created (especially those crazy state pension programs of the sort that have crippled California despite the 24% increase in state tax revenue over the last ten years) and you get a recipe for sticker shock.

Greg of TN 12:41PM January 29, 2010

Yes -- be careful ..... they make it sound affordable and then when the 2nd year hits....WOW ! Tuitions and room and board are raised, fees are added, and your incoming package from the school (not govt/state aid) stays the same ? Shouldn't it increase % to % w/ tuition/fee increase.... or why can't they keep tuition the same for the 4 years you are there like the college in Ohio does ? ?

Oh, and if you have managed to scrimp and save money for college -- you're penalized for it ! And if the kid has worked and saved money for college -- they are penalized for it -- and are not eligible for as much in grants.

.....Making money is the name of the game when it should be educating our young and securing a strong future for our country. It's sad really.........
