Maryland may not be large, but it packs quite a punch in its varied educational offerings, whether it's the cutting-edge research happening at Baltimore's Johns Hopkins University or the ultra-traditional, classics-infused curriculum at St. John's College in Annapolis.

U.S. News toured four of the state's colleges, two public and two private, where sailing and lacrosse—and even croquet—mostly trump other sports, and where one is never too far from the nation's capital or the Chesapeake Bay.
