Wait a minute. How can Oregon admit 17,000 freshmen if it's total enrollment is 19,500 undergrads? Your math is off, which casts doubt on your conclusion that: "Admission to the school is not extremely competitive."

And if THAT conclusion is wrong, then what stands as your entire evaluation of the school's academic prowess is haywire. Which means the fulcrum of your story and the analysis of Oregon's educational value is wrong.

Please resolve and correct--not just the numbers but the conclusions drawn from them.

To answer your question not every student who is accepted enrolls at a school. So considering those who drop out for numerous reasons, graduate, or attend other schools the numbers even out at approximately 20k students.

Something seems out of synch with the student population and admission statistics stated in the article. It states: "With about 19,500 undergraduates and just under 4,000 graduate students......Admission to the school is not extremely competitive. Of the 22,000 applicants last year, about 17,000 were admitted." They admit 17,000 students with a total of 23,000 students (undergrad and grad)????? How is this possible????
