I dont understand. Why are people not looking into financial aid from federal and state first? But instead they head straight to the scholarships and student loans. Then they complain about their loan accumulating interest. Research all you want, but if you're still coming up short, shouldn't it be time to try a different route?

Work as a civil servant for ten years and your FAFSA debt is foregiven. Granted civil servant work starting in or after 2007 counts towards those ten years, and you need to consolidate your loans to an income base/contigent pay back plan

I work for a state college they allow employees to take 2 courses a semester for free , some colleges also allow children of employees to attent for free. Cheap way to get a degree.

529 programs work good for upper middle class or rich people not for the working poor - middle middle class families who can barely manage rent and all that goes along with it. Sadly MANY colleges and universities DON'T offer Perkin loans even to those who can't attend thier school without loans.

Yes, apply for those scholarships, but understand that the competition is extremely high, so it's tough to get one and there is a lot of politics and political correctness involved. A lot!

Another poster, who sounds like they are advertising their own business stated, "Of course, the ultimate result and money won depends on the student’s motivation, determination, and commitment, but the money is there if you are willing to work for it" Is hogwash! It will depend on where you live, your race and if it's a scholarship from a small organization it will depend on who you know! The vast majority of scholarships are need based. Check to see what their limits are. Chances are you won't find that information on their web sites or their applications, so unless you are under the poverty level, don't waste your time.

This is reality! I have talked to dozens of college bound students who have filled out hundreds and hundreds of applications, and written hundreds and hundreds of essays....for not one drop. Unfortunately, sites like this lead students on a huge wild goose chase!

Question - You talk about how good the Stafford loans are but it seems to me the interest rates are high in today's market. The loan rate for my daughter's loan is 7.9% and it begins acruing interest immediately. At this rate she will graduate with $100K loan @ 8% interest. How is that a good deal?

I'm 2 young 2 be stressed out about college. I only have about 6 yrs 2 raise enough money for college. 6 yrs may sound like alot but it is not. If you are older than 6 then tell me where those yrs have gone. I'm older than 6 & I'm wondering where those yrs have gone. So, I guess what I'm trying 2 say is that I need 2 take a bottle like my baby sis. Not the one with milk or alcohol in it either if you know what I'm saying. I need 2 just chillax don't I?

This is a good article with some useful information. This is also a great time of year for students to apply for scholarships. By starting the process now, you will have a head start on the competition! Plus, any scholarships or contests that you win now will be a great addition to your student resume! Scholarships are a great source of money to pay for college, but most people don’t have the time or energy to look for them. And even if they do, there is so much information out there that it can be totally overwhelming!! I spent my son's entire senior year searching for scholarships, and yes, it paid off! As a result of all my hard work and the experience I gained, I founded Scholar Dollars. We provide personalized scholarship searches for students and focus on locating more obscure and local scholarships that are harder to find, which means that our clients have a better chance of winning! On average, we provide high school seniors and undergraduate students with OVER 250 scholarship opportunities throughout an entire year! You can find more information at www(dot)Scholar-Dollars(dot)com. Of course, the ultimate result and money won depends on the student’s motivation, determination, and commitment, but the money is there if you are willing to work for it!

Many people think that the grants should be done away with. But think about this. You average college grad makes 1 million more in a life time. They will pay about 30% taxes which = 300,000 The pell pays about 5,000 per year x 4 years =20,000

the U.S. government ends up with a 280,000 dollar profit (on average) meaning that "Free Grants" end up as profit. Besides, the pell requires a minimum GPA, so someone that's to awfully lazy won't get it anyway.
