"There are so many people on Facebook," Wilson notes. "Don't assume that things cannot come back to you."

Following basic codes of acceptable social media conduct can work in favor of job candidates, even if it means restraining an impulse to Tweet something negative after a stressful job interview or deleting your Facebook profile—which "for many graduating college seniors, seems like a painful thing," risk expert Schwartz acknowledges.
"At the end of the day, common sense prevails," he says. "You have to think before you Tweet [and] think before you post, especially in that critical period six months before you get out of school."
