Life in California isn't cheap in the best of times. Now, in the face of a crippling financial crisis, the state has drastically cut higher-education budgets, testing nerves and increasing the gloom in some of the sunniest or at least most laid-back spots in the land. • University of California—Berkeley
• Stanford University
• Mills College
• San Francisco State University
