I had a discussion in online class this week regarding this topic. The lady I was responding to had suggested there be classes in high schools to teach kids the dangers of inappropriate "actions" on sites like Facebook, Twitter, etc. I think she is right on with this idea. Because I have a granddaughter using Facebook, I want to be sure she understands what the consequences of her posts could be. I am determined to take this to the school system to see if something can be done there to alert the kids to the good things that can come from the social network uses and the bad things also so that maybe we can stop kids from doing things that will put a roadblock on their career path before it even gets started.

Since my son has attracted by social networks, I has not thought they are useful for students. Traditional stuffs still prove their power, students should spend more time at libraries than on the social networks for silly things!

until the likes of facebook and twitter "peak" and then decline. Don't overuse them. Yes, you do have to have an online presence of some sort today, but you do not have to "live there". The old adage that "80% of life is just showing up" (in person, at physical locations) is still true and has not been somehow replaced by technology and "connectivity".

Seriously, using Twitter hashtags to follow events in your industry, answering questions on LinkedIn, using Facebook advertisements or commenting on relevant blogs are WAY better (and more successful in This Economy) than any resume or cover letter. Go with it! It's more fun, too...

I really believe that social media is the new way to find work in the U.S. But you have to be careful because employers are looking. heard some great social media tips on www.jobtalkamerica.com

I don't think the article focuses enough on FAcebook and privacy controls. College kids have a much lower expectation of privacy, but it may catch up with people later in life. What you do know at 16 or 18 followers you. Students should read some of the warnings from various pundits re: social media (http://www.socialnews.biz/tag/Facebook) so they at least know the risks out there. Facebook needs to make money and they will do that indirectly by selling our info in my opinion.
