A college education is no longer a sure way to employment or a good salary. US

produces approximately 5 million college degrees a year (CDC) from 10,000 accredited

college institutions. I do not know how many are 4 year. But this much I do know over the past three year, NO AMOUNT OF JOBS HAVE BEEN CREATED TO ABSORB 15 MILLION DEGREED PEOPLE. Especially, jobs of the higher paying kind. The higher education bubble has burst and the cost that these institutions charge for one one should be adjusted accordingly. Every student should be aware of institutions that have act as a predator by promising students a career path that is available to only a small percentage of degreed people. Particularly, those in the college career offices across the country. Who has over sold and over promised their students about career opportunities.

The public education system keeps getting worse, and since college tuition has been increasing so far beyond the inflation rate, even upper-middle-class families can't afford college anymore. The less educated we are, the less competitive we are in the world, and the ridiculous price of higher education ensures that the US will be unable to compete for years. But nobody cares. They're only concerned with their own wallets. And once their kids are out of school, most parents will vote against education budgets, showing how ignorant and shortsighted they are about the future of the country.

Bigglesworth of OH 1:26PM March 27, 2010

Whoever says its not bad out there, please insert foot into mouth now. I'm currently WAY undernourished to ensure that I can have a college education. Good for you if you haven't taken a pay cut. Good for you if most of your family isn't unemployed. However, don't pretend that means your perfect little world is everyone else's. It disgusts me to see how much rich kids squander every resource on the most insignificant of things. They're outright repulsive. I know people who have tried to work their way through college to no avail. My own family has only one breadwinner, my mother- whose salary has been cut in half. She is supporting me, my boyfriend (who was abandoned by his parents out of greed), my grandmother, my aunt, and my two uncles. My aunt's a paranoid schizophrenic and the government doesn't do crap for her. Another thing! Most of you, the parents, haven't the slightest clue what's wrong with our education system or the health care system for that matter. Want to know why? Because you're the cause. The most absurd thing you do is pretend to care when all you care about are yourselves. You're too focused on yourselves and how you look all the time to care properly for anyone around you. Most kids like the fact that they don't have to even try to get into college, and get in on either their parents' merits or money. So much for a meritocracy! That's the biggest lie out there. I could have a 4.0 and I wouldn't even get money, because somehow my mom makes too much?! This is the largest load of bull I've ever heard. This is why I hope one day stupid people will just blow us all up out of sheer stupidity. Want to know why? Because I don't want to have to worry about your incorrigible stupidity anymore.

There's a big question unanswered in the United States: Do we really pay more than lip service to education in this country and the need for educated citizens?

Case in point #1: We routinely overcrowd classrooms, underreward and overwork teachers, and let parents get away with abdicating their responsibilities in the educational process. Yes, we do these routinely, yet we claim we need better K-12 education, better educated students, and a well informed electorate. This, to me, is not the way to put our money where our mouths are, and saying "there's not enough money" is simply a classic cop-out. We really don't mean what we say when it comes to education. What we really mean is education is something we're not willing to fund PROPERLY.

Case in point #2: Higher education in the United States is rapidly becoming too expensive for too many students. Yet we claim we need college-educated people. Continue raising the ante and we discourage more and more youngsters from even bothering, thus losing potential in the name of money we're not willing to spend--as in full tuition scholarships, NO interest loans, the trading of service for free tuition, etc. We really don't mean what we say when it comes to higher education, too. What we really mean is higher education is something we're not willing to underwrite because, well, that's money we're willing to spend. Talk about contradictions!

Do we really pay more than lip service to education in the United States? Not in my book.

I like the comment above about how medical schools are extremely selective in filtering who makes it and who doesn't. Forgot to consider the medical foreign grads who fill the gap or who get in debt but cannot enter into the US system. The comment above is one possible solution, increasing filtration pressure! Like increasing academic standards for medical school, tuition itself can be seen as a filtration pressure. In other words the author above offers a solution him or herself.

Presented above as well is the issue of loan indebtedness. It also looks like the author above implies leads one to think that a solution is a social system like Europe or Canada or Latin America where one does not pay for higher education at a public institution.

What is so wrong with student loans anyway? I graduated from Williams in the days before the no-loan policy. I am first generation college and did not come from a wealthy family. Thankfully, Williams has excellent financial aid resources. But I do not believe that "no loans" is necessary. I received an excellent education, why shouldn't I bear as much of the costs as feasible? And I went into non-profit work, so I do not believe you have to sell your soul to pay your student loans, at least at the undergraduate level. If student loans make the financial aid system more sustainable for future generations of students, so be it. It is the least I should do for what I received.

Got that degree.

owe $$$$$$$$$$.

can't find a job. IQ 138. so what.

The previous comments are SOOOOOOOOOOOO correct.

Obama will pay for your education out of "his" stash.

lol lol

Think about this when you vote.

Oh and the "Human Services" person? Isn't that government work? That isn't a real job. Just this- what do you produce? NOTHING!!!!!!!

You suck the money out of the public sector, nothing more. Now go protest about higher cost of an education and smoke your pot. social worker, geezze what a life.
