I tell my high school students that if they or any adult feel uncomfortable with any part of their college application essay, they need to edit or choose a new topic. Confess to your clergy or your therapist, not your college admissions officer. Essays are all about showing your uniqueness and strengths in a positive way.

The term "crew Team" is redundant as a crew is a team. Rather one ought to write "rowing team" or simply "crew". Sometimes the more archaic term "rowing crew" is still seem (as in "my daughter joined the rowing crew at Yale.").
