I wish I had answers for you. I am looking for schools for my daughters. Schools in the South and the Midwest are generally cheaper than any schools on the coast, but there are always exceptions and schools that cater to special populations. I know nothing about that. In general state schools are always cheaper and if you get into the honors program, you might get more financial support. Many students are going to the community colleges for a 2-year degree (very very cheap) and then transferring to a 4-year college or university. Make sure the community college offers a transfer program to your 4-year college. This is the cheapest route. California models this program, but the 4-year schools are crowded and expensive for the most part. Michigan is good. Detriot is rough and hurting from economic depression, but I heard it is looking for talented people and offers incentives for people studying in certain fields. There are many colleges in that area.

There are enough great state schools and lower cost of college schools or options, e.g., community college transfer programs, that we should boycot sending kids to 30, 40 50 thousand dollar-a-year schools. It is insane. Out of school with a 100,000 dollar debt to start out life!?!??!?!!? Unless of course you are in the 1% or somewhere in the Eagles Nest. Most of us are just holding on to the tree and slowing slipping down. Add debt to poor job prospects unless you get the right degree.
