Many engineering disciplines do NOT require any such licensing. Electrical engineers - like those that have designed virtually every computer out there, every bit of electronics from video games, to the new HD Tvs, to the electronics in your car are not licensed. Mechanical engineers, who design cars, military vehicles, guns, and many other physical items are not licensed.

The ONLY license that I know of is that of a "professional engineer" - and that is used strictly by people who are designing roads/bridges/buildings/etc. And trust me - from the civil engineers that I know - the test can't be all THAT hard.

Tell me what test teachers take? How about school superintendents? How about Politicians? Sure, lawyers take the BAR exam - a one shot deal, but once again - look at all the yahoos out there and THEY passed the bar.

If you think that licensing is some type of guarantee of quality then think again - it is just another way for the government to SUCK MONEY out of people.

My wife is licensed as a nurse - yes - she has to pay her annual fee and for that she gets virtually nothing back from it. Yes, new nurses have to pass the nursing board, but I've seen some of the people that pass this - trust me - it's not all THAT difficult.

So - tell me what other engineering disciplines require licensure - you'll be hard pressed to find them (other than the aforementioned "professional engineer" - aka civil engineer).

I have a question?… MY husband received his Senior Reactor Operator Permit from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, and holds a Qualified Resource Operator License from ASME back 1970. At the time hew worked in the nuclear field from 1970-2003 since then he left the nuclear plant worked for at a trash to energy plant, unfortunately he was laid off in July of this year due to change of contract. My husband is now trying to get back in the nuclear field but has had no luck… I was wondering could there be an age factor?

Read "Fossil Fools" by Joseph Schuster ! It's a must read for our new government. We need to construct these new reactors ASAP and stop burning fossil fuels that are poisoning us and our environment.

A very fast growing engineering school is at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. They are moving ahead in overall energy engineering in s big way. Charlotte is the home of a number of energy engineering firms...a center of activity for the industry.

If you think the number of new nuclear engineer graduates is low, you should check out the dismal number of engineers that become licensed as Professional (Nuclear) Engineers each year. Historically the nuclear industry has not supported such licensure. This is unfortunate as this is perceived as an arrogant attitude by many members of the public, especially when other engineering disciplines require such licensure in order to advance in their respective fields or to work as consultants.
