This is a great perspective on this. I had a similar situation in high school. The only subject I did not excel in in high school was math, but everyone made me feel like a poor grade in math was going to prevent me from getting into the best colleges. So instead of focusing on my strengths and interests, I poored my heart into Trigonometry and Calculus (which I have never, ever needed in my career) and anguished over my poor grades. If I would have focused on my strengths, I probably could have gotten into a great school that actually focused on what I was interested in, but I didn't know where to look to find these schools.

Now, I know that there a ton of resources out there. In addition to the books you mentioned, I would also recommend an online search. My three favorites are Petersons.com, collegeboard.org and myusearch.com (I am the co-founder of myUsearch, just want to be transparent, but I honestly think it's a great resource). Hope this helps.

I wanted to express a sincere thank you for writing this article. I am the oldest in my family of the siblings and the cousins - and was the first of this generation to go to college - with that, I have tried to guide each of them on the college application process as best as I could. And with each of them being different and having a different "applicant package" it is often hard to communicate that there is something for everyone. Especially being from an immigrant family, where the top schools are only viewed as the only option. It also didn't help when I attended a top very selective school with a full engineering scholarship. Anyway, I have shared your article with the most recent bunch working on their college application process now. I appreciate the support.
