Obama Showed Moral Leadership With Gay Marriage Support

With gay marriage, the contrast between Obama and his extremist opponent, Romney, could not be more clear

Back to argument

Brian Brown's claim that President Obama's decision to drop the defense of DOMA somehow imperils state level DOMAs is false. DOMA has two substantive provisions: the first is a reiteration of the (usually waived for opposite sex marriages) state right to ignore a marriage performed in another state; the second, in a move that was otherwise unprecedented, prevents the federal government from recognizing certain types of marriages recognized by some states.

Legally, the repeal/strikedown of DOMA would have no impact, in and of itself, on the marriage laws of any state -- though it would grant immediate federal recognition to the valid marriages in MA, VT, CT, NH, NY, IA and Washington, DC that are currently unrecognized on the federal level. And, of course, states -- such as RI -- would be free to decide on their own accord (as they are now) to recognize marriages performed in other states.

Since DOMA itself does not prohibit same sex couples from marrying, it seems incredibly unlikely the the Supreme Court would rule on whether same sex couples enjoy the same fundamental right to marriage as opposite sex couples; as such, state level DOMAs would be unaffected.

Haha Heather Granger, did you post that tripe with your REAL name!!

Yes Obama is now on the side of the majority of Americans (an ever growing majority) who agree that same-gender couples should have equal marriage rights. That *IS* the evermore mainstream position.

Romney, on the other hand, has come out in opposition to even Civil Unions as well as signed a pledge to amend the U.S. Constitution to eliminate same-gender marriage rights nationwide! These are extremist positions which the vast majority of Americans do not share, not even George W. Bush!

And the only one's who seem to be obsessed with bestiality and pedophilia (not just other people's adult sex lives) , are fundamentalist right wing nuts who for SOME strange reason cannot distinguish between relationships of informed consenting adults, and relationships between animals and children who cannot provide informed consent.

------------------------------

Outraged, the only ones who want to redefine marriage are fundamentalist right wingers, who want to eliminate the idea that marriage is about a commitment of love and devotion between two intimately bonded people who desire to share, endure, and enjoy their lives together, to care for and protect one another, and to be and become a family together (along with any children they might raise), TO being about nothing more than what genitals are involved.

THAT is the most denigrating redefinition of marriage there could be!

Face it, you don't give a damn about marriage. You want nothing more than to impose and maintain your religiously based anti-gay animus onto our society.

I find it comical as hell (yet, I'm not laughing) when the author states: "....Obama and his 'extremist' opponent, Romney...!"

With the gay and lesbian patterns of thinking, their pedophile nature is already in place, and bestiality has to be on the top of their list too!

....isn't that just (appropriately) "ducky"??

Homosexuals do not have the right to define marriage for everyone else. How intolerant to be forced to accept their chosen lifestyle!

When Obama is elected for a second term we will still have a skyrocketing National debt, abysmal economy, a weak milatry, and an unchecked flood of illegal immigrants flooding our Southern border, but hey, at least gays will be able to marry and women will have unfettered access to free abortions. Hope it's worth it!!
