I believe that you are very accurate in stating that 2011 was not the worst year in American history. There have been many worse times, such as the great deppression and the Civil war. Times were worse and we will get out of this mess the same way we have in the past.

I completely agree with this theory. The United States has seen better days, certainly, but at the same time it has seen far worse. As you said, it would be very hard to trump the South secceeding from the Union.

"And this account doesn't even include the challenges presented by the Teapot Dome scandal, the Great Depression, either of the World Wars, Vietnam, or the energy crises of the 1970s."

This statement is perfectly correct, in my opinion. America has seen far worse times in it's breif history, and while this year certainly does not make the Hall of Fame for great years for us, it doesn't make the Hall of Fame for worst, either.
