Making Sports Betting Legal Protects Bettors From Fraud, Theft

Legalizing industry opens it to regulation, and sends money into municipal coffers, not criminals' pockets

Back to argument

As we would find out if we checked Sen. Lesniak's campaign contributions, the real pressure to legalize sports betting is money. If it is legalized, amateur sports will be all about money. Forget sportsmanship, personal growth, team spirit, the thril of achievement. They would all take a back seat to sports lines and betting.

Legalizing sports betting would expand legal and criminal betting and corrupt sports.

Don't talk about government oversight making gambling safer or less corrupt. Make government a profiting partner in an operation and "oversight" becomes window dressing. Toss a few dollars at problem gambling programs (not one of which can show that it makes a measurable difference) and pretend that the huge increases in gambling that accompany every legalization have no negative impacts in our society--that's what government oversight of gambling does.

BJ Jahoda who ran casino operations for the mob in Chicago said the mob loved legalized gambling because it created new customers for their gambling operations; at the same time, he scorned legalized gambling because it targeted widows, the elderly and the poor, which, he claimed, the mob would never do.

Good government does not run on exploiting the weaknesses of its citizens.
