'Occupy' Movement Purposely Has No Single, Set Demand

Occupy Wall Street could become far more powerful than the Tea Party

Back to argument

We don't need to encourage the lack of a unified demand. This article is not going to help OWS one bit.

And the irony is that OWS *does* have a unifying demand around which to rally, but they refuse to state it in a simple form, so I will: government should tax and spend more. There you have it.

Since when did you become the spokesperson for the Occupy Movement?

Uninformed, idotic, Faux news watchers like yourself are NOT spokespeople for the Occupy Wall Street Movement!

Occupy is much more powerful than the Tea Party movement, which was funded by monied interests to support conservative agendas. Occupy is a true grass roots uprising, of a truly spiritual nature.

It comes from the silent heart, which understands Truth, Peace, Love, Righteousness and Non-Violence.

And it is unstoppable.

"Although Occupy Wall Street may have an impact on electoral politics, it does not share the partisan trajectory of the Tea Party."

Is that total detachment from reality I detect?

1) Name one OWS candidate. For that matter, name one politician who would be stupid enough to call himself or herself an OWS candidate. How can OWS have political impact if no one is insane enough to associate himself or herself with OWS?

2) Find one OWS protestor who identifies himself or herself as Republican. Recent surveys have found none. How then do you say OWS is nonpartisan?

"...the protesters have been eloquent in rejecting the idea that they produce 'one demand'...."

And this is why OWS will fail where the Tea Party succeeds. The Tea Party does have "one demand:" government should tax and spend less. There is plenty of room to debate how that reduction in taxing and spending should occur, but it is that singular demand that government should tax and spend less that unites the Tea Party and gives candidates a basis for claiming Tea Party affiliation. If OWS cannot come up with the same kind of clarifying message, it will dissolve into political irrelevance.

And the irony is that OWS *does* have a unifying demand around which to rally, but they refuse to state it in a simple form, so I will: government should tax and spend more. There you have it. There is the singular message that any politician is welcome to adopt as part of his or her campaign platform and thereby align himself or herself with OWS. Good luck with that.

@CONTINUALLYAMAZED

Respectfully, what many of these people are calling for is not new. It has been around about 100 years and is responsible for between 170 million to 200 million needless deaths.

I believe the individual is the smallest minority there can ever be and that their minority status must be protected. That's a round-about way of saying the government should exist to guard individual freedom and rights thus providing the most liberated society in which to work, grow, learn and produce.

Whether or not that makes me part of the "right" in your view is immaterial. For I am indeed scared. I am not scared of the people protesting Wall Street, or the politicians in D.C. or any group of people. I am scared of the profound ignorance we see in this once-great country. Even people with a room-temperature IQ wouldn't welcome a bad idea if they knew it was bad and why.

Too few people understand why collectivism is pure evil. And we all may pay the price for their ignorance.

I think Warren Buffet has some great ideas! http://regtremblay.wordpress.com/2011/10/16/warren-buffett-how-to-fix-congress/

Barb of CA 12:53AM October 20, 2011

Yup. Every one of these comments just indicates that the 'right' is scared. There are more people in these demonstrations than ANY Tea Party meeting and they are consistent and continuous. The movement is strong, centered, and clearing the way for a new vision for our country. New ideas are always a little scarey at first kids. I for one am with the Occupy groups and will support them in any way I can. There's a change in the making and it will shake the country more than a 7 point earth quake.

What BS!!! They don't care what Wall Street has done. What they care about is their ability to use it to futher their socialist/Revolutionary aims. Everyone with a brain and an understanding of what is going on KNOWS it is not an "Authentic" or an "independent" movement. Come on you Bozo, no "independent" movement pops up with a slick newspaper after 2-3 days. Not to mention have you bothered to look where there support(financial) is coming from. Its not from a group that allows for wondering off the(socialist) "reservation". What a awful job of reporting Mr.Weissman has done. What fools he has as Editors.

Bill of CA 6:36PM October 19, 2011

Weissman needs to see the movie "Lost City," then maybe he would understand Occupy Wall Street--or he could take a look at the recent WSJ poll--these people do not reflect a cross section of unemployed Americans. Why do you think the American Communist Party and the American socialist Party indorse them? Answer: they are birds of a feather.

Don Johnston of TX 6:35PM October 19, 2011

If it weren't for the Democrats forcing the banks to make those loans the market wouldn't have gotten flooded with them then Wall Street wouldn't have bundled them and sold them.

Whose fault? Wall Street sure but Barney Frank and Chris Dodd started the avalanche.

The Occupy protests are supported by George Soros, the biggest Capitalist on the planet - can you say HEDGE FUND anyone?

Bogus movement - the hint is that is is mostly composed of college students recently graduated from liberal universities with professors of the same ilk as Bill Ayers - haters of America.

The protesters should go home and watch Slum Dog Millionaire and thank God that they live in the United States.
