America Is Not Prepared to Safely Drill in ANWR

The Alaskan refuge belongs to the American people, not the oil industry

It also therefore belongs to me as well so drill baby drill, we need 1200 acres to get this done...out of thousands of square miles BTW. The animals are not stupid, adapt very well to changes-better than liberal environmentalists...if you really want to save oil then just quadrupal the CAFE standards thereby crippling our economy and eliminating demand, just pass a law angainst theft and murder while you are at it and crime will disappear. What an imbecilic argument!!!!

The more oil we get here in North America, the more we are independent from foreign oil! If the Middle East goes under, USA can still thrive with North American oil!!!

Shell Oil Company has had safe production at Prudhoe Bay for many years all done safely. With all the new technology available today, I cannot see why it cannot be done at ANWR,

So just making a law requiring higher fuel efficiency will work? Why not require that cars get 1000 mpg, or even more? Why not require that cars MAKE gasoline as they run along the highway? Ah, the power of magical thinking and liberal dreaming!

Tom L. of AL 9:50PM November 03, 2011

I am deeply concerned about protecting our environment; but the risks involved in this project are vastly overstated. The environmental movement has been co-opted by criminals out to swindle the taxpayers out of big money with their so-called alternative resource development. How many "green" tech companies have gone bankrupt just in the last 6 months owing American taxpayers BILLIONS of $ in unsecured government loans? Alternative resources are important, but the fact is there is very, very little available, ready for use, & affordable so far. Even the highly lauded wind power facilities kill thousands of birds, including endangered species, every year. The technology doesn't yet exist for anything that will significantly reduce our dependence on oil in the near future. Higher standards for fuel efficiency are a double-edged sword. Those drive the costs of energy & products up; & who suffers the most when that happens? The poor, who can't afford to go out & buy new cars, more efficient appliances, etc., & who must reduce their purchases of food & other necessities when energy prices increase for the providers of those things. It's simply not possible to reduce our need & increase our alternatives fast enough to avoid tapping what resources we have of fossil fuels-which are far greater than most people realize. We have the technology & resources to do it safely. Dependence on foreign oil is a huge security risk & an economic disaster. We need jobs HERE. We need to keep our dollars HERE. And the location of the nearest Coast Guard base is irrelevant to an ONSHORE site, which ANWR is. That kind of statement is intentionally misleading to the American public who are concerned about environmental issues.

What kind of cars do you tree huggers drive? Is your house solar or wind powered. How about all the plastic products in daily use by you.IF we had a readily available and reliable alternate energy that was cheap it would be in use I believe, but until then oil is king.I hate to see oil spills(I live on the Gulf Coast,Pensacola,Fl) so yes,the oil spill affected me,but the ban on drilling has hurt just as much, because people are out of work and gas prices haven't gone down to meet the low wages around here.Until something better comes along,we NEED the oil.Just do it safely,it can be done.

robert stiriz of FL 9:25PM November 03, 2011

The 10 year estimate to deliver oil is totally false. The infrastructure already exists a few miles away. Producing wells could be in place in only 18 months.

Also, Obama's wishful-thinking 54.5 mpg will not make it happen. It's totally insane to think that is achievable with today's technologies. There's nothing that will be ready to make that happen in the next decade, in fact.

David of IL 9:18PM November 03, 2011

These arguments have no merit whatsoever. Oil drilling has been going on for decades just outside the proposed drilling area. What difference does a few miles make in that region. It's a vast wasteland (have you seen pictures of the area?). The proposed drilling methods are environmentally sound and will have a very small footprint. The other 99 % of ANWR will remain off-limits to development, so stop the madness - drill now and increase the world's supply - reduce oil prices for all.

Polaris of IL 9:14PM November 03, 2011

Drill baby drill

Gary of PA 9:08PM November 03, 2011

I don't see any practical solutions coming from the left. While we starve ourselves, other countries are drilling right on our borders and sucking our economy dry. We need the jobs and the energy resources that drilling on our own ground will provide. This would boost our own economy, put out of work people into good paying jobs and relieve the energy crunch in our own country. The "green" solutions are expensive in the extreme and simply have not been proved workable, even with taxpayer billions flushed down the toilet to promote them. We cannot afford anymore of this nonstrategy.
