President Obama Needs to Ban Assault Weapons

We need restrictions on both gun and ammunition sales

The automobile is a weapon of war too. From the earliest chariots, wheeled vehicles have been used for warfare. Today over 40,000 Americans are killed and hundreds of thousands injured each year in car crashes.Motor vehicles are used to commit homicide, suicide, sexual assaults, kidnappings, transportation of stolen goods and illegal substances. But we are willing to accept that cost because of what the automobile gives us. Unprecedented freedom and mobility.

There is a cost too for the ownwership of firearms. But that cost is also worth it.For the first time in human history, guns have allowed the weak to defend themselves against the strong. And the USA has enjoyed over 200 years of freedom where the government dares not attack its own citizens.Throughout history, governments have slaughtered and enslaved people by the millions.IN the USA, citizens are suppose to rule, not government officials who are appointed by the citizens.

If someone wants to kill others, they will find a way. In the middle east, they use bombs to kill others. We saw that happen with the Oklahoma bombing. Terrorists used jet airliners to kill over 3000 people.

Most of the gun violence today is due to the war on drugs and social problems that make people desperate. The US does not have a gun problem, it has a people problem. People who have nothing to lose, commit theses kinds of crimes.

We all need to address poverty and inequality. We need to stop this war on drugs now.

If we can threaten and change the second amendment, then what is to stop others from changing the first amendment, or perhaps the fourth amendment?

The founding fathers wrote the US Constitution with memories fresh in their minds of the tyranny that King George imposed upon them. The US allowed citizens to own the same rifles their military used at that time. The USA must do the same now.

You guys are idiots, the founding fathers wrote the constitution and the second amendment so that people could hold weapons of war and enough of them to overthrow the government should it ever become tyrannical. This is well documented. Our government is corrupt as a motherfuc*er and you guys wanna give ALL of the military power to them so that they can fu*k us more.. Idiots. If the sh*t ever hits the fan and you go asking liberty lovers to save you, they'll probably shoot your stupid a*s. You deserve it for being a dumba*s that wants tyranny.

I agree that people have the right to bear arms, but a line must be drawn. I don't think the writers of the consitiution think that Ak-47s, glocks, 100 rounds mags, tactical nukes would ever exist. I mean i'm up for people owning handguns, shotguns, rifles for hunting and that lots of gun owners are responsible.

Ban cars too. They are used in so many crimes these days. They kill a 1000 times more people than firearms. Without cars you can't run over police or spouses. You can't as easily Kidnap children and commit horrible crimes against them. They are the cause of 40,000 plus deaths a year. They are absolutely horrible. I can't believe President Obama has not banned cars. Did you know that there has been many deaths of children and Animals that have been left in cars? Did you know that motor vehicles are used in most violent crimes. I CANT BELIEVE that these animals in the white house have not banned cars. Violent Crime would clearly go away if we just banned cars. I mean look at all the people who own cars. Most of them are obviously just white angry males who want to take over the government. Car Nuts are just disgusting. God gave us legs, give peace a chance.

Amen to all my fellow gun rights brothers and sisters. The old saying still holds true. Locks only keep good people out and gun laws only keep responsible people from aquiring them. Put money into jails and 10-20- life laws for offenders of gun crimes like in Floridia. This country was founded and developed by people with firearms. If we were a country with no guns ever then maybe all would be ok without firearms BUT its not. We are so saturated with firearms that all legal persons with a clean NCIC background are deserving of any firearm, any amount of them, and amount of ammo there heart and pocket book can afford. Also concealed permits are up and less than .05% of those people ever fire there weapon in defense. Here in Tn we can by suppressors, full auto, and short barrel rifles with the state having to sign off on it by law as long as your clean. No mass shooting here!! Guns are tools. It the operator that makes that tool- object good or evil. Enough said. THINK BEFORE YOU SPEAK.

Man up and buy a gun, never know when you will need it. Learn to protect your family and yourself rather than bashing our second amendment. If we ban assault rifles then I suppose people will just use homemade explosives instead, inflicting a lot more damage. The bad guys will always find a way to hurt others and if they want a certain kind of firearm, then they will find a way to get it. With people like you, before we know it, all firearms will be banned, and then we really will not be able to defend ourselves or this country. Always reading the negative reports of these weapons. Pick up a NRA magazine and you will read the stories of innocent people whose lives were sparred because they were able to defend themselves from crazy and deranged

people. This is just the start with assault rifles. If we eventually lose our right to bear arms, as a country, we become a weak and vulnerable country. If something really needs to be done, why don't we take care of the gangs on the streets and protect our borders even more. Also, it doesn't help that our military accepts just about anyone and everyone allowing gang members to learn how to deal with special weapons and tactics. Once they are back on the streets, they are teaching all of their friends and families, creating a very dangerous and combative environment for the community and its law enforcement. Perhaps something other than messing with our right to bare arms should be done in this country before a real mess rises.

NO - One of the main purposes of the second amendment is for the people to protect themselves against the state.

I'd like to know where you get your information. The number of background checks for firearm purchases has doubled since the year 2000. December 2011 saw 1,862,327 background checks alone. Gun ownership is definitely not on the decline.

If you're really interested in the truth about gun control and how it affects criminal activity (which I doubt you really care to be more informed), I recommend the book "More Guns Less Crime" by John Lott. His use of statistical analysis of facts dating from the 70's through Clinton's ugly gun law as opposed to your use of made up thoughts proves just as the book title suggests.

Furthermore, the second ammendment was not established to protect our right to hunt, it was intended to protect the people from an overpowering government.

"Besides the advantage of being armed, which the Americans possess over the people of almost every other nation, the existence of subordinate governments, to which the people are attached, and by which the militia officers are appointed, forms a barrier against the enterprises of ambition, more insurmountable than any which a simple government of any form can admit of." -James Madison. Federalist Papers #46.

Why don't you man up Josh and stop being a gun fearing coward?

Jarred of NC 10:21PM November 12, 2012

All a ban would do is disarm the common man so all the bad guys can kill you easier and take what they want with no risk. Plenty of people stock ammo, with no intention of raising an army or hurting others. Simply recreational or protection, including protection from growing socialist government. Not to mention our easy ownership of firearms and ammo has arguably been a main deterrent to invasion.
