James Holmes Proves Need for Tighter Gun Ownership Regulations

Children being gunned down by maniacs is not the price of freedom

Back to argument

Joshua believes that every police car in America is an 'arsenal' and that sport is the only legitimate purpose for owning a rifle in America. Farmers, hunters and fishermen own rifles not only for their livelihood, but for self-defense. The 20% of Americans who live in 80% of the country need our rifles not only for sport, but to put meat on the table and keep ourselves safe in places where the sheriff is an hour away or more. Joshua seems to believe that if he uses enough military verbiage and scare tactics, he can persuade Americans to give up their freedom from fear. This is even though three-quarters of gun homicides are committed with handguns, not rifles, and every law the Brady Campaign has proposed has proven either to have no effect on, or to increase violent crime. California is a poster child for the gun ban movement, and unsurprisingly, California's strict gun laws do not stop either violent criminals or the violent and inaccurate portrayal of firearms in Hollywood movies and television. Clearly it is cities that drive people crazy and cause the fortunately rare massacres sprayed across our television screens. Perhaps we should ban cities instead.

If our RULERS would hurry up and identify everything that could harm someone else and BAN it, we would all be........ lazy, mindless, liberal socialist sheep who have no interest in individual's rights & freedoms.

Saying ar 15s are only good for mass murders, is like saying cars are only good for killing people in car accidents, or fire is only good for burning "witches" in the Salem witch trials, or knives are only good if your going brave heart on your neighbor or something. So I propose we should outlaw NASCAR, dump trucks, stoves, and the American peoples ability to butter toast. While we are at it, water is only good for drowning our unwanted babies, and sex is only good for getting AIDS. So let's get rid of those too.

Fact - Annually, more people are beaten to death by bare hands than killed by rifles.

The following is from the FBI website:

http://www.fbi.gov/about-us/cjis/ucr/crime-in-the-u.s/2010/crime-in-the-u.s.-2010/tables/10tbl20.xls

And that is all rifles, including semi-auto, bolt action, etc.

Seems the focus on "Assault Weapons" (as they are mischaracterized by the media) is misplaced and would be fruitless. Rifles account for such a small fraction of violent crime. You just want a scapegoat for your cause to justify your existence.

To ColoradoGunOwner: "They were specifically designed to kill as many humans as possible in the shortest span of time."

Which is why all the police forces have been exempt from the various 'Assault Weapon' Bans.

Can you define an 'Assault Weapon'? Why do you automatically assume all opponents of arbitrary semi-auto bans are 'right wing'?

Thirdpower of IL 9:19PM July 27, 2012

The responses above show the disconnect between reality and ideology of the Right. There is no reason for ANY civilian to own assault weapons....NONE. They were specifically designed to kill as many humans as possible in the shortest span of time. I am a gun owner and have no fear that removing assault weapons challenge my second amendment rights and those who state that Colorado would have had a different outcome if someone else in the theater had been carrying is RIDICULOUS!!! It was DARK, there were two TEAR GAS bombs set off, most people could hardly BREATH let alone SEE. There would have been many, many more woundings and deaths. Anyone believing it would have helped just proves why MORE people shouldn't even be allowed to OWN a gun. WOW! The lack of just plain common sense is almost overwhelming!

ColoradoGunOwner of CO 12:54PM July 27, 2012

Kindly explain how the AR-15 is any different from any other firearm. Hint: The Clinton Gun Ban was entirely ineffective because the only thing it did was ban cosmetic features, because that's the only thing that distinguishes the AR-15 from any other rifle out there. In fact, the cartridge it fires isn't even legal to hunt deer with in most states.

so SWAT supplied james with his gear. ok.

so a private illegal military supplied him with weapons and gear, ok. so the government is in on it. ok. nothing new under the sun here folks. you know, the CRIMINALS in government? this event reaks of MK ULTRA! go figure. have a nice day.

Guns aren’t even the most lethal mass murder weapon. According to data compiled by Grant Duwe of the Minnesota Department of Corrections, guns killed an average of 4.92 victims per mass murder in the United States during the 20th century, just edging out knives, blunt objects, and bare hands, which killed 4.52 people per incident. Fire killed 6.82 people per mass murder, while explosives far outpaced the other options at 20.82. Of the 25 deadliest mass murders in the 20th century, only 52 percent involved guns.

Placing more restrictions on firearms and ammunition only effects law bidding citizens not criminals. I do agree with background checks and so forth, but again what is to stop a criminal from attaining a firearm? That is the problem at hand. I believe every American should have the right to defend him or herself from any acts of terrorism or violence, but putting stricter laws in place takes away our rights to do so and gives the offender more of an opportunity to take full advantage of knowing that there will be little to no resistance.
