James Holmes Proves Need for Tighter Gun Ownership Regulations

Children being gunned down by maniacs is not the price of freedom

Back to argument

I agree with the author:

Everything he did was legal, aside from the actual murdering. The law backed him up. Yet this was the largest mass shooting in U.S. history. There’s no way of stopping these people except for making it illegal to purchase guns. Screening gun-customers, taking background checks, keeping records. These are all ineffective in reducing and eliminating homicides. Anyone can fake an interview, break into records and present fake I.D.’s. Holmes is an honors student and Ph.D. candidate at a nearby college with a clean arrest record; no one would have ever thought he would such a thing. But he did, taking 12 lives with him, traumatizing dozens, and scarring hundreds of thousands of people across the nation.

Some may say the right to bear arms gives us freedom. But why should we have to pay such a high price for that? What sort of freedom should risk thousands of lives yearly?

From the article:

"But we do know many things about him. We know that he is a disturbed young man whose behavior was so odd that one gun range owner in rural Colorado rejected his application for membership."

So chalk one up for the firearms industry. The rangemaster took his own initiative. No need there for federal intervention.

More from the article:

"We know that he passed two background checks that took only the most cursory look at his mental health background. Because Holmes hadn't been involuntarily committed or formally adjudicated by a court as a "mental defective," he was free to buy all the guns he wanted."

So instead of bleating about "tighter gun control regulations", why not investigate why an obvious kook (just like Jared Loughner) was NOT "involuntarily committed or formally adjudicated by a court as a 'mental defective'"?

Lastly, from the article:

"But how many Americans struggling with serious mental health issues fall into one of those two narrow categories?"

Hello? Is Mr. Horwitz even listening to himself here?

In just about any city downtown area, legions of kooks wander about all night long. It's unsafe for an average citizen (who isn't crazy enough to do so) to visit downtown night events in our cities.

So why are these kooks out there? How many can legally buy firearms because they "hadn't been involuntarily committed or formally adjudicated by a court as a 'mental defective'"?

My suggestion to Mr. Horwitz is to work toward reform of the psychiatric industry instead of continuing his blind hatred toward the NRA and sane firearms owners. We already outlaw kooks to buy firearms. What we need is to identify and certify the kooks so the FBI can deny them purchase upon instant check.

Amazing how the left thinks that making guns illegal somehow equates to criminals not having guns.

Joshua, you're right in that James Madison's intent was to enhance citizens' domestic security. However you make the point that these "modern sporting rifles" are only good for violent insurrection against the government. Firearms in the hands of American citizens deter threats from abroad AND threats from within, including the government. It makes me think of the famous Thomas Jefferson quote, "When the people fear their government, there is tyranny; when the government fears the people, there is liberty." If guns were more limited or even banned. I am willing to bet James Holmes would have found a devious way to end life.

I get sick of people associating guns to cars. ANYTHING if used improperly can be deadly! Even a god damn pencil, water, AIR can kill you! A gun's SOLE PURPOSE is to kill. It has no other purpose.

And by the way, there are far more regulations on cars than their are on guns.

Come on! Can anybody strap 4 cars to themselves, then walk into a theater and shoot 71 people with a car? Can you conceal a car? That argument is not even comparable to a car!

Guns don't kill people, psychiatry does.

Not too long ago, an idiot ran down a bunch of kids as they were leaving school. Where was your call to ban vehicles?

Guns are tools, and are incapable of doing anything of hteir own volition. Regulating them further does not offer any additional protection except in your own mind.

Julie T, more of us are afraid of the gangs that will NEVER respect ANY law, therefore we have not only a RIGHT but a DUTY to protect ourselves and others. More laws that nobody obeys unless they feel like it are not what we need. Ever notice that Pot is illegal, yet currently more people use it openly than ever before?? Best way to guarantee that something will become popular is to Ban it...remember Prohibition??

And in all seriousness, the reason the Second Amendment was put into place was so that Armed Insurrection would be available if Government got too greedy...which currently, at the cost of 4 BILLION Dollars per Day and ever-higher taxes, is starting to look like its time for exactly that!!

We fought Britain over (basically) a 3 pence (cent) tax on Tea...our founding fathers never meant for our government to become the giant Bureacracy it has become...we ceased living in a Democratic Republic in 1993.

Paul Kersey of FL 11:28AM July 30, 2012

Yes this is not the 1700's and the need for guns is obsolete, we are not hunting for food you can buy it in the store and you don't have to worry about getting shot out on the trail, enough is enough and how many more people have to die

Julie.T.Goldman of MO 10:32AM July 30, 2012

I am a woman and as a law abiding citizen I will proud fully exercise my right to bear arms. Had I been in that theater you can bet I would have utilized my extensive shooting range experience to protect myself and many others. And yes I would have done it in a dress and high heels! I am so sick of politicians and their cronies and their foolish notions that tighter gun laws will prevent death. Walk in the streets of any major city and you will quickly find that street thugs have some of the most sophisticated weaponry and guess what... They didn't legally obtain the weapons!!! The drug cartels in foreign countries are these people's dealers... So I ask do you think thugs are going to turn in their weapons because of a ban or apply for a license to carry??? NOWAY...and politicians will NEVER even put a dent in the illegal weapons coming into this country. So viva el NRA and back off of my right to protect myself if I find myself face to face with some mental basket case that wants to take my life! Police (whom I respect greatly) will very rarely be present when wackos decide to imitate a video game shooting spree so please stop trying to render those of us who are responsible gun owners from protecting ourselves and those we love from the James Holmes of the world!! I promise you that you would want one of us arm bearing good citizens at your side if a lunatic started doing what James Holmes did and believe me I would even protect you a complete stranger and probably lose my life for you and yes I am a total girly girl that in a split second would become a gunny girl if faced with imminent danger! Yes James Holmes did obtain his weapon legally but trust me the illegal weapons obtained in our country by complete thugs is astounding and should be greater cause for concern!
