Joint Economic Committee, Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs, Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, Senate Committee on Rules and Administration, Senate Committee on the Budget, Senate Select Committee on IntelligenceMark Warner, a freshman Democratic senator, was a popular Virginia Governor from 2002-2006 who ended his term with record-high approval ratings. Before entering public office in 2002, Warner was a venture capitalist who made millions for his part in founding the cell phone company that became Nextel. He also served as a fundraiser for the Democratic National Convention in the early 80s and as chairman of Virginia’s Democratic Party in the early 90s. During his term as governor, Warner was surrounded by presidential buzz for the 2008 elections, but he dropped out of the contest early, announcing in 2006 that he didn’t want to leave his “real life” and put his family through the demands of a national campaign. His announcement shocked political insiders, including the staff of his own political action committee who were poised for the race. Warner hinted at a possible future bid for the presidency. In 2008, he successfully ran for Virginia’s open Senate seat, rejecting suggestions he might be chosen as Vice President on then-candidate Barack Obama’s ticket. In the Senate, Warner has pushed for fiscal discipline, and his post on the Senate Banking Committee allowed him to play a key role in developing the financial reform legislation that was signed into law in 2010. A centrist Democrat, Warner is against gun control and advocates for increased lending to small businesses. In 2010, Warner served as a judge on an episode of Bravo’s TV series Top Chef D.C. He and his wife Lisa have three daughters.
