David Vitter
U.S. Senator
Republican, Louisiana
- Date of Birth: May 3, 1961
- Birthplace: New Orleans, La.
- First Elected: 2004
Committee Assignments:
Senate Committee on Armed Services, Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs, Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works, Senate Committee on Small Business and EntrepreneurshipDavid Vitter, whose voting record paints him as a far-right conservative, was one of only two senators to vote against Hillary Clinton's confirmation as secretary of state in January 2009. Before coming to Washington in 1999 as a member of the House, Vitter was an attorney and an adjunct law professor at Loyola and Tulane Universities, and he served in Louisiana's state House of Representatives from 1991-1999. After three terms in the U.S. House, Vitter was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2004. He gained national attention in 2007, when he was entangled in a prostitution scandal--his phone number was found on the so-called "D.C. Madam's" contact list. Vitter publicly apologized, saying his "very serious sin" was in the past, and he was already working to make it up to his family. After the April 2010 oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, Vitter opposed President Obama's moratorium of off-shore drilling, citing job losses and the potential for economic damage to small businesses on the Gulf Coast. Vitter has advocated for term limits for members of Congress and for repealing the healthcare legislation that passed in March 2010. The day after Obama signed the healthcare reform bill into law, Vitter introduced an amendment to repeal it. Vitter and his wife Wendy have four children.
