Jeanne Shaheen was the first woman elected both governor (1997-2003) and U.S. senator (2008 to present). Shaheen, a teacher and then political campaign manager,  won her first election as a New Hampshire state senator in 1990. She was vetted as a potential running mate for then-Vice President Al Gore in 2000 (who chose Sen. Joe Lieberman). Shaheen lost a Senate bid in 2002 to John Sununu when she supported the Iraq War and Bush tax cuts. In 2005, Shaheen became director of Harvard University’s Institute of Politics at the Kennedy School of Government but left the school for a rematch with Sununu in 2008. She now condemned the war in Iraq, and also criticized Sununu for supporting the $700 billion bank bailout known as TARP. In the Senate, Shaheen supported healthcare reform legislation passed in 2010, backing a public option. After the April 2010 BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, she called for an overhaul of the U.S. Mineral Management Service, accused of having a too-cozy relationship with Big Oil. Shaheen and husband William have three daughters and seven grandchildren.
