Republican Rob Portman, former White House budget director under George W. Bush, began his U.S. Senate term in 2011, replacing Republican George Voinovich, who had retired after serving two terms. Portman was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1993 and represented his hometown Cincinnati-area district for 12 years. He left Congress in 2005 to join Bush's cabinet as U.S. Trade Representative. The next year, he took the job as budget director, serving until 2007. He then worked as an attorney for the Ohio-based law firm Squire, Sanders, & Dempsey. Portman graduated from Dartmouth College in 1979 and earned his law degree from the University of Michigan in 1984. He and wife Jane have three children.
