When she was first elected minority leader in 2002, a year into her post as minority whip, she became the first woman to lead a major party in Congress. She became speaker when Democrats gained control of the House after the 2006 midterm election. Pelosi is politically progressive, and she played a vital role in the 2009-2010 healthcare reform debates. Many analysts credit her with the controversial bill's passage.
