Ron Paul, an obstetrician/gynecologist, was inspired to enter politics when President Richard Nixon ended the gold standard, a direct connection between the U.S. dollar and a standard weight in gold, in 1971. Paul still advocates to reinstate commodity-backed currency. He first served in the House of Representatives when he won a special election to replace a resigning representative in 1976. He lost his seat that fall, but regained it in 1979. After three terms in the House, Paul left the House and unsuccessfully ran for the Republican nomination for a Texas Senate seat in 1984 and for president in 1988 as a Libertarian. Paul returned to the House in 1996. He espouses a strict libertarian political philosophy, preferring limited government, low taxes, and free markets. He is the author of several books, including End the Fed about his disdain for the national bank. He is against the war in Afghanistan, preferring a “non-interventionist” foreign policy. When he sought the Republican nomination for president in the 2008 campaign, Paul said in a debate that the attacks in New York in September 11, 2001, resulted from years of U.S. intervention in the Middle East. His fundraising for that nomination included a “money bomb” on December 16, 2007, when supporters donated more than six million dollars in one day. The event, held on the anniversary of the historic Boston Tea Party, is one of the seeds of the current Tea Party movement. Paul faces an easy election to keep his seat this November, and he has endorsed his son, Rand Paul, a candidate for Kentucky’s Senate seat and a Tea Party favorite. Paul and his wife Carol have five children and seventeen grandchildren.
