Barbara Boxer

U.S. Senator

Democrat, California

Date of Birth: November 11, 1940
Birthplace: Brooklyn, N.Y.
First Elected: 1992

Committee Assignments:

Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works, Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, Senate Select Committee on Ethics

Barbara Boxer became a senator after 10 years in the House of Representatives, where in 1991 she led a march of women demanding the Senate take seriously allegations of sexual harassment against then-Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas during his confirmation hearings. In the Senate, Boxer chairs the Committee on Environment and Public Works as well as the Senate Select Committee on Ethics, making her the only sitting senator to hold two committee chairmanships. She also acts as chief deputy whip, articulating and advancing the objectives of the Democratic leadership. Boxer has advocated for environmental protection, consumer safety, abortion rights, gun control, and education. She faces a challenging race this fall against Carly Fiorina, the former Hewlett-Packard CEO, who is running on an anti-incumbent platform. Fiorina has spent millions on her campaign while Boxer has had more success with fundraising, including an event that featured President Obama. Boxer is a mother of two and a grandmother of four.
