Washington Post Editor: No Government Bailout of Newspapers
By Nikki Schwab, Washington Whispers
It seems that even the top staff members at the Washington Post are split on whether the government should step in and do something about the country's sagging newspaper industry. "My gut says no," Washington Post Executive Editor Marcus Brauchli said last night at the National Press Club. "I think it's a live conversation in Washington, and I think, looking at it as an observer, I think newspapers in general have a lot of anxiety about becoming dependent in any way on the government," the Post's top editor added. Brauchli's comments follow those of predecessor Len Downie Jr., who saw some promise in funding news-gathering operations using a National Public Radio-like model. "I think there's a real potential there without in any way changing the relationship between the government and press," Downie said in September. The Washington Post Co.'s newspaper division lost $143 million through the first six months of the year.

let it die
The media put that clown in office who is destroying our country during its destruction.
Payback: let the newspapers die. They deserve it for unshamed partisan support and heralding a new age in advocacy journalism. Just desserts.
Newspaper bailouts
I'm sure that the government would give money to the newspapers with no strings attached...the same way they did with banks and automakers...What could go wrong here? Let us not forget the NEA propaganda machine being run out of the White House. Any time the government gives you money the next step is dictating what you must do to keep the money. This is true even at the state level. States must do what the Feds require or risk losing their federal funding. The newspapers are already in the tank for Obummer and federal money will just make that worse. What next, impose restrictions on the internet or talk radio...oh, wait.
No Newspaper Bailout
Get the newspapers bailed out by the government and what do we have?
Pravda, comes to mind. Our socialist leaning President would love to have control over the newspapers. You could just imagine what we would hear about his health care takeover, ACORN, most of his czar appointments, his cabinet members,etc.
