Washington Whispers by Paul Bedard

Obama's Healthcare Cost Crisis Hurts Him

June 26, 2009 05:51 PM ET | Permanent Link | Print

Pollster John Zogby regularly updates our ObamaMeter. Each week, Zogby uses his polling, expert analysis, and interaction with major players to come up with a rating of between 1 and 100. The ObamaMeter, however, is not a poll-generated job approval number. Instead, the Washington Whispers ObamaMeter is Zogby's judgment on the performance of the president once multiple factors are considered. In this week's ObamaMeter, Zogby says that the president did well on Iran but is facing hurdles on healthcare.

"Obama raises the rhetoric on Iran by a notch but doesn't take the bait from Republicans and the press with language the mullahs can use against the dissidents. He shows a little prickly humor at press conference when asked if criticism from Senators McCain and Graham led him to use stronger words on Iran. 'What do you think?' asks Obama. He adds that McCain can be passionate, 'but only I'm the president of the United States.' At home, with GOP ratings in the tank, Obama's bigger problem is getting congressional Democrats to agree on healthcare legislation. Fallout from Congressional Budget Office's report on a Senate healthcare plan continues, as high cost gives fuel to GOP opponents of plan and cold feet to some of Obama's Democratic friends. New polling from Zogby International shows some slippage in Obama's job ratings, with just under half—49.8 percent—rating it excellent or good and 51 percent approving."

This week: down to 77

Last Week's Rating: 82

Zogby Poll??

Republican senators have made it their mission to protect the Insurance industry so

What Republican senators won't tell you is that their own health care plan looks a lot like the Obama plan...only better.

Federal employees, like thed Senators who rail against a public option, get about 75 percent of their health insurance premiums funded by taxpayers....you and I.

It gives them the right to select their own doctors.

And it follows them into retirement.

According to US office of Personnel Management's own website,

"Federal employees, retirees and their survivors "enjoy the widest selection of health plans in the country. "

So if Republican Congressmen are getting a great taxpayer financed health care plan why would such a plan be disastrous to our country?

No one subsidizes my healthcare...least of all the taxpayers. I pay 100% of everything.

Give me what US Republican senators get...and I'll drop my support for Obama's plan

Until then, Republican hypocrites should join Senator Ensign and Sanford and apologize to the nation for not practising what they preach

poll

I'm surprized obama has anyone supporting him at this point.

Give Us Your Solution

Instead of crying and whining maybe critics should try to be positive and constructive and give their own solution to the current unsustainable healthcare crisis in the US.

What, more of the same? Doesn't work.

Stacey of MO - the majority of bankruptcies have been the middle class, and they worked and had insurance but were pushed over the edge for the necessary treatments that their insurance would not cover. These are people who sound very much like you in income and values. Get with the times - you are spouting the talking points used decades ago that no longer apply.

Bobbles Poll: Obama's Socialist Joke?

President Obama and "Oboker" bobbleheads for Washington Whispers. Bobbleheads provided by webobbles.com.

Shouts that President Obama is steering the nation and budget in a socialist manner have become so loud that now our bobble supplier has designed a "Socialist Obama" titled "OBOKER," a play off Heath Ledger's evil Joker who sought social upheaval in the The Dark Knight. Do you think that Obama's agenda is exactly what the country needs or a push into socialism?
